precedents for look and feel

I saw this animation in Japan Cut this summer. It looks like 2D animation, but it's made in 3D.

look and feel test

I'm building the boy character in 2D by Illustrator and After Effects. The environment is going to be modeled in maya so I can easily get different camera angle. The robot is going to be made in 3D, too. For all the 3D elements, I'm going to use toon shade with stroke, so that they can work together with the 2D boy.

Here's a dirty prototype of the look and feel. The chair and desk are rendered from maya, while the boy is in illustrator. This is not the color that I'm going to use, just a quick test to see how the 2D and 3D combination works.

This is a test with After Effects cs3 puppet tool. The character is a simple version from illustrator.
